Yes Sir?

When did it become “insulting” to call someone sir or ma’am? I was brought up to address people with respect, but I’ve noticed lately if I say something to a guy that holds a door for me along the lines of:

“Thank you sir.”

I get a response along the lines of:

“Sir? Sir?!?!? You don’t have to call me sir!”

or

“Sir?!?! My father isn’t here!”

When did displaying good manners go out of style?

    I think some people feel old when called Sir or Ma’am! I know I do.
