All that Glitters is…Green?
Watching a special on E! the other day I found out that it’s now the “hot” thing in Hollywood to “go green”. Major stars like Julia Roberts are jumping on the band-wagon and modifying their behavior and lives by driving eco-friendly cars and shopping with canvas bags instead of plastic. Now usually I’m against any sort of Hollywood fad because they are either:
1. Too expensive for my broke ass to afford.
2. Will cause me to regret and possibly burn pictures of myself ten years later.
3. Make me think that money really does make people go bat-shit crazy.
But this time around I can actually support what’s going on in the Hollywood hills. I’m sure something new will come along soon and most of the green-stars will move on to the next big thing but at least for now they’re doing something right.
So I’m curious as to where does that leave the rest of us?
We here at Casa de la Bug have started converting all the bulbs in the house to compact florescent by switching out a couple a week (it’s kinda expensive to do all the lights at once). And I must admit that the light bulb thing is kinda selfish on my part because from what I understand it’s cheaper to use them…and I’m all about doing stuff on the cheap *chuckle* We are also lucky enough to live in a city that provides free roll off carts for recycling so we participate in that as well.
Are any of you guys making small adjustments in your lives? (switching out light bulbs to compact florescent, ditching the plastic bags, etc.)
Or have you jumped in with both feet and took the full greenie plunge? (purchased an eco-friendly car, converted your house to solar energy)
Or do do think this is all a bunch of crap and you have better things to worry about?

I agree…we have to take care of mother earth. For that very reason, I’ve completely stopped my habit of wandering around aimlessly spraying various aerosol cans in the air, and I have cut back my daily tire fires to only one per week!
Also, I have those weirdo bulbs in all lights.

Hi Buggy Niece…some of us evil baby boomers have been doing these things for a very long time…since the last time people noticed that old Ma Nature would survive in any way she could & odds are, it wouldn’t be too human friendly…if we kept up our incredibly destructive behaviors. Hollywood ain’t got nothing on the old granola heads…but it IS a good thing that “they” have decided to use their visibility for something besides going to rehab. My concern now is that we’ll get all fascist about green, just like we did about driving the biggest gas guzzlers we couldn’t afford, but our survival may depend on it so I think I’ll just stop here and go stoke my daily tire fire!! Love ya

We use the energy saver bulbs (helps on electric bill), all water saving appliances in the apartment (courtesy of the complex), energy saving appliances (refrig and stove from complex, our own washer/dryer), and even the Wii and such are energy savers,, so we’re pretty energy saving. Heck, we drive a car that have 40 MPG highway, so I think we’re doing pretty good

…LOL @ Amadeus!!!!!!!!!! THANKS!
USE A DRYER??? I hang the clothes up on the line (even tho I have a dryer) Seems like the big orange ball in the sky does such a nice job, why fix what isn’t broken…
Oh, I still gave aluminum cans for Grandma…
And to cut down on waists (:-) ) I’ve given up eating for Lent-even tho I am not Catholic.

Ummmmm… energy saving bulbs - check. Dimmer switches on most of the lights in the house, check… our new house is supposed to be all up and on top of the energy efficient stuff.
We recycle…

I’m just slightly tired of hearing about the green movement. It’s great that people want to do this, but the bragging and the berating is just annoying. I do lots of different things that are eco friendly, but not on purpose, it is just a perk to my lifestyle.
But good on you Bug!

I’m still against any and all fads. Besides, “going green” sounds more like “going hippie” than “going cool”
