The Boobs Among Us: Part Deux

I’m pretty sure at least one of you were wondering what the hell I was asking y’all about boobs on magazine covers for. Wellp, it actually stemmed from an article I read in the San Francisco Gate titled ‘Breast’ Cover Gets Mixed Reaction. They talk about the uproar caused by a cover of Baby Talk (one of the same covers you gave feed back on) and how there were people who were in sheer outrage over seeing a woman’s breast on the cover of the mag.

It made me wonder if compared to some of the other images we see on the news stand how it would stack up in the discomfort department of my little group o’ readers.

On a side note to hopefully clarify something, I didn’t write the post intending to spark controversy over which form of feeding a baby is better (breast vs. formula). We all have our own opinions on that matter, including me. The post was mostly for my own curiosity as to see just what people really view to be “uncomfortable” in the magazine media we take in on a daily basis as well as their reactions.

I wanted to see if there would be anyone who reflected the views as some of the people in the article (hence why I wouldn’t share the link before). But I hope this post doesn’t turn any of my readers against each other, it really was never my intent to do that to y’all. Promise.

It wasn’t a perfect study so the results I present below aren’t a very clear picture of the entire nations view on boobs obviously. But it’s really interesting for me to see what y’all had to say and what you think about all this stuff. Thank you to everyone who took the time to respond!

16 People responded with singular answers to each question

3 People responded that overall none of the pictures caused them any discomfort

The numbers below reflect the totals taken from the 16 singular answers:

-The cover that made folks most uncomfortable was tied between AA and CC.

-The cover that made folks the least uncomfortable was tied between CC and DD

-The cover people were most comfortable with their kids seeing was CC

-The cover people were most uncomfortable with their kids seeing was AA

-The women that responded were more comfortable with their partner seeing cover CC

-The men’s answers were a 4 way tie on the covers they thought their partner would be most comfortable with them seeing.

I was surprised to find in the article how many people were really worried about seeing a boob. And in my opinion a rather innocent picture of a boob compared to some of the other things we and our kiddos are seeing all over the place. So, the conclusion I’m taking from this for myself is basically that people are generally pretty cool with seeing woman breast feeding on a magazine cover as much as they are pretty cool with seeing other types of breasts. It’s really nice to see that there’s a diversity of opinion on this one…ok…I swear I’m done pickin’ your brains…for awhile anyway ;)

A new Yandy Review is coming on Saturday and I have some really cool news tomorrow that you can make some money off of so stop in wouldja!?!? wh00t!

  1. It never ceases to amaze me what people get their panties in a wad about. Nursing is natural…and I’d rather my kids see that than a fake oversized boob staring at them from my latest copy of FHM.

  2. I think we need to see more breasts on magazine covers personally…Congrats on becoming one of the elite featured PPPers haha We are living the dream.

  3. I wrote about this a few weeks back too. Personally, I wrote about it for comedic reasons, but also to purposefully stir people up.

There are more important things in life to focus on than trying to pick a fight with a baby magazine that wants to talk about feeding babies.

Maybe I’m biased, all three of my kids were breast fed. I have friends that weren’t capable of breast feeding their kids so they used formula. There’s lots of arguments on both sides as far as the actual feeding goes.

As to the sensitivity over the picture, its a baby eating. simple as that. Anybody that wants to get hung up on the boob has issues.

  4. Babies are cute. Boobs are cute. Babies and boobs can’t be all bad.

  5. I’ve ranted myself about this same cover on different forums. It surprises me that people have no problems seeing half covered boobs every day, but have to pull out the “I’m so offended” card when they see a boob doing what it was actually meant to do.

  6. Amen A! That’s what God created boobs for…. to nurse our children. Some people needs a life,,,, or maybe they’re jealous because they or their female significant other have -AAAs. Who knows.

  7. I have to agree with Colleen.

Personal experieince indicates to me folks are MORE comfortable with unnatural portrayal of breasts than with a natural portrayal.
…and why would anyone want to debate breast-feeding versus the bottle? I breastfeed both of my kids, but am aware that for some women brestfeeding wasn’t an option.
…can we get more anal? (not to change the subject!)
    :-)

  8. I discovered your blog when Battlerocker left a comment on my blog. Bare midriffs are less controversial than bare breasts, but I’ve explored the significance of a bare midriff on the cover of a relatively unlikely magazine title in a recent post of mine.

  9. LOL @ Mom …onto anal now are we ? hehehe

Thanks for posting the results..I found this very interesting indeed! :)

  10. You know, it’s really not that obvious that it *is* a boob on the cover there. I think the magazine spreads for summer’s new bathing suits show more boob than that.

Besides, like someone else said, nursing is an extremely natural thing! Everyone makes such a big deal out of making sure people breast feed their kids, but the moms who do are made to feel like they are embarassing the whole rest of the world beccause they are doing what they feel is best for their child. Arrgh. Pisses me off!

  11. *sigh*
Betcha the ones that are complaining are men.
They get all bitchy when they have to wait in line.
    ;)
