Anon Advice

I haven’t done this particular writing exercise in forever…and I’m too lazy to go back in my archives and find the last one so here’s a quick run down of how this shit works:

I see people all around me having problems, feeling blue, needing advice. However, I’m not able to just give them what they need due to whatever circumstance. So I do Anon Advice here and it gets it off my chest. Sometimes the intended will read them, sometimes they won’t. Either way I want it out of my head. So here we go:

Dear Miss Pollyanna,
I’m one of those “Miss Pollyanna” types as well hun. I know that feeling you have right now all too well– when shit really isn’t working out in my own life and I get a buncha people coming to me with their problems as well. It’s a crappy feeling knowing that you’re too exhausted to go on but there’s no escaping the road ahead and everyone is lookin’ for you to smile and make it ok.

My grandmother gave me some simple advice when I was a little kid. Only two words but they mean everything in the world to me:

“Cowgirl Up”

When a cowgirl gets thrown and is laying in the arena, fists clenched from holding on tight just moments before, face covered in dust, eyes welling with tears at the disappointment of the ride (and fall), body screaming in pain– she has two choices. Lay there in the dust or get the hell up off the ground and move on with your business. Cowgirl Up. Sure it hurts like hell to make that first move off the ground but once you get your mind set to do it you’ll find that inner strength re-news itself. The first few steps to get yourself out of the arena will be painful and even seemingly impossible but walk through the pain and next thing you know it’s all behind you and you’re ready to take on another ride.

Garth Brooks also just came out with a new song called “Good Ride” and its chorus has become my personal anthem:

…Life’s a Highway
There’s only one way you’re gonna get through it
When she starts to twist be more like Chris
Pull your hat down tight
And just LeDoux it!
When that whistle blows
And that crowd explodes
And them pickup men are at your side
They tell you good ride cowboy cowgirl, good ride

You’re going to make it though Pollyanna, now get your ass to the spa and have a day for yourself! Then jump head-first into your problems, hang on tight and knock those suckers down! *big hugs*

Dear Child,
I’ve helped raise you all along– watched you go from diapers to driving in what seemed like no time flat. It still makes my head spin. You must remember how special you are, there is no other child in the world like you, I love you and will no matter what you do.

I’m not pleased with your choices kiddo, not at all. But you’re going to be an adult soon and you need to fall down on your own so you can learn how good it really is to fly. You were given the tools and the know-how to stay out of trouble and you’re tossing those to the wind. My heart hurts because of you right now child. I know you’re smarter than this, and so do you. Just remember that no matter what kind of surface distractions you are after, nothing will ever compare to your family’s love and support. Be good child, I’ll be here waiting.

Phew, ok so that’s done….two posts in one day…what are they putting in the water over here?

    Yes, MOST excellent advice!

I call it soldiering on- but it means the same thing. Yesterday I hauled 15 (VERY HEAVY) bags of river rock from the hardware store to my car, then from my car to the back yard, then dumped all the bags onto the garden pathway, and spread it around.

That got out a whole lot of built up frustration, plus it made my yard look even better.

Now, how can someone stay in a pity party after a day like that?

Seriously, I’m in a WAY better place today. I needed to take stock of what is important and then get my whiney ass off the couch and do some physical labor.

I think that’s a phrase that I need to remember! It’s hard to get back up, but it’s worse to choke on the dust!

Love the advice posts! Great advice too. While “Cowgirl Up” wasn’t the coined phrase of choice, that is the exact advice I’ve been given as I grew up! Did you know my grandma too?
