Let There Be Light
Yesterday afternoon was fairly normal, everyone was working diligently on one thing or another. The computers were humming away as we all were billing or working on the sites. Techno music was blaring from the speakers while the ancient swamp cooler creaked along noisily blasting freezing air into the office. I could hear the air compressor turn on and off in the shop, the phone was ringing off the hook…it was a normal afternoon at the ol’ ranch.
Then the power went off.
Dead silence, computer screens were blank, work was lost, the air shut off, the only sound was the dogs barking.
The entire block went down, there was no water as the pump for the well is electric. My cell phone started ringing off the hook. Everyone wanted to make sure I was aware there was no water. Which…uh…duh…I know. I finally shut the phone off and was seriously thinking about resigning as chief trustee of the wellshare.
Since there was no power and I couldn’t get anything done online I figured now would be a good time to work on other things. In the two hours and fifteen minutes that we had no power I cleaned out my desk, opened the stack of mail that had been collecting in my tray, paid some bills, took the dogs out for a run, pruned my rose bushes and played two games of Uno. And it was nice!
Maybe they should make it a ritual of shutting the power off for two hours a day so that we can get stuff done..
